A prop firm challenge is an evaluation program that traders must complete in order to qualify for a funded account. During the challenge, a trader is given a simulated account and asked to reach a set profit target, typically between 8 and 10 percent of the account size, while staying within defined loss limits.
Some firms run a two-phase evaluation. The first phase requires reaching a higher profit target to demonstrate that the trader can generate consistent returns. The second phase uses a lower target to confirm that the first result was not achieved through excessive risk. Other firms offer a single-phase evaluation or an instant funding option with no evaluation required. Most programs charge a one-time entry fee, which is often refunded after the trader passes or receives their first payout.
A challenge evaluates more than just profit. Firms pay attention to how a trader manages risk, whether position sizes remain within the permitted limits, and whether the trader avoids any restricted strategies. Reaching the profit target in a controlled and consistent manner is the clearest signal that a trader is ready to manage real capital responsibly.
